Large Language Models (LLMs) come in various flavors and sizes. They are made for different purposes and their output can vary significantly. Also they differ in terms of cost quite dramatically.

One way to get an idea of the many different LLMs out there is to check out the Leaderboard section on OpenRouter.

OpenRouter is a platform that lets you use all different kinds of LLMs through one unified API. It has the well known models such as GPTx from OpenAI as well as Claude, Gemini etc. But it also has some lesser known models such as the DeepSeek R series etc.

The cool thing about that is that your application can easily switch between different models for instance in order to always get the best price for the intended usage.

But even if you don’t have an application programmed, you can easily compare the models hosted on OpenRouter by using their Chat function.

You can choose different models and then have them answer the same prompt in parallel.

When I play around with this, I can often see quite huge difference between the models. Currently I prefer Grok, the models of x-ai.
