Recently I had the great privilege to speak at Athens Music Week on a panel with Aga Samitowska, Orfeas Boteas, Anna Zo, Mara Doukidi and Dimitris Papspyros. The question was about the relationship between music and technology. Here is what I had to say:
"I think music has always used technology. You could argue that the grand piano, for example, was an invention that significantly differed from earlier pianos. Composers and musicians loved playing with this new instrument because it provided new capabilities for expressing themselves through music.
This isn't a new phenomenon. What is new is that we are now changing the business of music significantly through recent innovations. Ultimately, technology and music have always been intertwined. We use technology to be more creative and efficient. It's the pace we need to get used to."
