Hello and welcome back to The Mindshift AI Inference!
We have been thinking about AI wrong.
The conversation has focused on better chat interfaces, smarter models, faster responses. But the real shift is not about making chatbots better.
It is about making them disappear into the background of your life.
I call this ambient AI. Not a tool you visit, but a presence that is always there.
Think about how we use AI today:
OLD WORLD: You open a chat window. You ask a question. You get an answer. You close the window. The AI forgets everything.
NEW WORLD: You talk to your assistant from your phone while walking. Later, you continue the conversation writing from your laptop. The assistant remembers. It knows what you were working on last week. It suggests ways forward towards your goal, it critiques your thinking where it sees flaws.
This is not science fiction. A project called Moltbot (recently renamed from Clawdbot) demonstrates what this looks like in practice. It is an open-source personal assistant that runs on your own server and connects to WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and your terminal all at once.
What makes it different?
Multi-channel presence. The same assistant across all your platforms. No more context switching between different AI tools.
Persistent memory. It remembers what you discussed, not just in this session, but across weeks and months. And here is the key: that memory is stored as readable files you can inspect and edit. No black box.
Proactive behavior. It can send you scheduled updates. Check in on tasks. Remind you of things without being asked.
The transparency aspect matters more than it seems. Most AI assistants hide how they remember things. Moltbot's memory is literally a folder of markdown files. You can open them. Read what it knows about you. Correct mistakes. This builds trust in a way that hidden systems cannot.
Why does this matter?
Because everyone has access to the same AI intelligence now. The models are increasingly similar. What differentiates is what the AI knows about you, your work, your preferences.
An assistant that has been with you for months, across channels, remembering your projects and patterns? That is more valuable than a slightly smarter model that starts fresh every time.
The question is no longer "which AI is smartest?"
It is "which AI knows you best?"
The future of AI is not a better tool. It is a better companion.
Have a great day!
Matthias
The Future is Ambient AI
We have been thinking about AI wrong. It is not about making models and chatbots better. It is about Ambient AI: not a tool you visit, but a presence that has superb context about you and is always there.
