Hello and welcome back to The Mindshift AI Inference!

Last week we looked at Cowork and Alter - AI assistants that live on your desktop. Today I want to show you something different: AI that lives in your terminal, sometimes also called command line.

Wait. The terminal? That black screen with the blinking cursor?

Yes. And here's why it matters.

Before Graphical User Interfaces, the terminal was the interface. Then it became a specialist's tool that is powerful, but requires a knowledge of a difficult language.

AI changes that. The terminal is still the direct route to your machine. Now AI can help you find a way.

Here are three tools that live in your terminal that are opening this powerful path for you:

  • Please is a small tool that turns natural language into terminal commands. You type what you want in plain English. It figures out the command. Simple.
  • Claude Code is Anthropic's official CLI tool. Most people think it's only for programmers. It's not. It works with any text file such as notes, drafts, research articles. I use it to manage this newsletter amongst many things (more to come on this soon.)
  • Opencode is like Claude Code but open-source which makes it adaptable. Plus you can use a lot of different AI models with it, even local ones!

The command line never lost its power. It just waited for a translator. Now you have one.

Have a great day!

Matthias

Before Graphical User Interfaces, the terminal was the interface. It is powerful but difficult to use. AI is changing that.
